Salix is looking to work strategically with clients, and can:
- Reserve funding into the future.
- Fund projects which span several financial years.
Since 2008 Salix has financed over £151 million to street lighting projects, working with 62 local authorities across England. In 2011 the first LED project was committed by Gloucestershire County Council through its Salix recycling fund.
Savings to the public sector are impressive with annual savings of over 109,000 tCO2 and £29.9 million, which equates to over £559 million during the lifetime of the technologies.

Salix recommends that clients ensure they are familiar with the relevant regulations and standards when planning a street lighting project. Salix recommends that clients access resources from independent bodies such as The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP) for further guidance and technical support, including ensuring clients are familiar with the relevant British and/or European standards for street lighting.
Guidance such as the IET’s publication ‘Recommendations for Energy Efficient Exterior Lighting Systems’ outlines policies and regulations that should be followed when considering a street lighting upgrade which can be purchased from their publications website.
For Parish Councils, it is also important that they obtain the necessary MHCLG (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government) approval to take out a loan. More information specific to parish councils can be found here.
