As part of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, Cheshire West and Chester Council has been awarded £5,836,172 in government funding to reduce carbon emissions in 14 public buildings, including four schools, six Brio Leisure sites and four Council buildings.
It is estimated the technologies installed will reduce carbon emissions by 1100 tCO2e per annum.
The grant will support the Council’s sustainability plans which outline efforts to decarbonise energy sources in public buildings, in order to become carbon neutral as a borough by 2045 and for Council to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030.
The funding secured through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme will help us take significant steps forward in reducing our own carbon emissions as an organisation and will provide an opportunity for us to lead by example.
In 2019 Cheshire West and Chester Council voted unanimously to declare a climate emergency. Since then, the Council has set out its Stronger Futures Plan for Recovery and Renewal, with climate change a top priority.
The Council’s Climate Emergency Response Plan outlines actions required, alongside evidence on the borough’s current carbon footprint, and progress leading up to 2045, when it aims to be carbon neutral.
The Council will work closely with residents, businesses and partners to make significant changes. Leading by example, the first steps taken will reduce its own carbon emissions and improve the energy efficiency of public buildings.
