Coryton Primary School in Cardiff benefit from more sustainable energy source through the installation of Solar PV

With schools and pupils becoming increasingly aware of the effects and importance of climate change across the world, many are looking to install renewable and energy efficient technologies that provide the potential to decarbonise their estate.

Earlier this year, Coryton Primary School, part of the Pear Tree Federation in Cardiff, used funding administered by Salix through the Wales Funding Programme, to complete a £26,761 Solar PV project.  The production of electricity from renewable solar energy on site reduces the school’s reliance on the grid and provides a greener, more sustainable energy source for the school.

Thanks to the installation, Coryton Primary School is estimated to save around £75,937 in lifetime financial savings and over 6.7 tonnes of CO2 per annum whilst benefitting from cost savings of over £15 per pupil per annum.

The project has also been a useful educational tool for pupils to learn more about renewable energy as they can see the electricity being generated.

Sally Phillips, Headteacher of Coryton Primary School said, “We are absolutely delighted with the installation. The return on the investment is already very clear, equally important is the message and values it promotes to our pupils and wider community about sustainable energy and the need for all organisations to step up to the plate and make big changes.”

Over 400 maintained schools in Wales have already benefited from energy efficiency upgrades with Salix Finance, reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, lowering the cost of energy bills and providing a more comfortable teaching and learning environment. This has included simple measures such as heating, LED lighting and controls, IT upgrades and swimming pool covers.
