Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust completes £30m energy upgrade project

Project overview

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has completed works at Broomfield and Basildon hospitals to improve their energy efficiency, lowering bills and slashing their annual carbon emissions by over 2,421 tonnes. The funding, provided by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and delivered by Salix, has enabled the University to upgrade its technologies and move closer to its carbon saving goals. 

The Trust was awarded £20m in loans and £8.6m in grant funding as part of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme which has allowed upgrades to the buildings including cavity wall insulation, metering and double glazing with metal and fabric frames. 

These works will keep heat within the buildings, reducing the need for central heating and ensure hospitals are warm for patients and staff.

The project is estimated to save Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust £3.8m annually and reduce carbon emissions by 2,421 tonnes per year. This supports the Trust’s plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, a full ten years earlier than the UK’s national target to be net zero by 2050.

The Trust aims to meet net zero emissions and NHS national targets of a 47% reduction of energy set for 2028/2032.
