Swindon Borough Council begin multi-million-pound street lighting upgrade

Swindon Borough Council is expecting to see a substantial decrease to their energy bills and carbon footprint thanks to a multi-million-pound street lighting upgrade project.

The project, which started on site in July 2020, will see 28,000 streetlights converted to LED lanterns and smart central controls installed. The upgrade will provide better lighting services for residents and reduce the Council’s energy consumption by approximately 61%.

Salix provided the Council with £6.97m of interest-free finance to fund the project, which will save almost £800,000 per year and also considerably reduce light pollution.

Lindy Frey, Street Lighting Programme Manager at Salix, said: “We are proud to be supporting Swindon Borough Council to deliver this major upgrade which will deliver crucial financial and carbon savings, and play an important role in the authority’s climate action.”

The project, which is due to complete in November 2021, is just one of the many ways the Council are working to achieve their low carbon and climate change ambitions.
