Collaboration is key when sharing the journey of reaching net zero
On Thursday, 27 July 2023, Salix hosted an event Creating Low Carbon Campuses to bring together those working within universities and colleges from the North of England.
Presentations, workshops, and a panel discussion allowed attendees to explore pathways to success and challenges around decarbonising estates towards reaching net zero during this first-of-a-kind face-to-face event held at Northumbria University Newcastle.
The event was chaired by Simon Pettett, Salix assistant director and included representatives and presentations from the universities and colleges team and Salix energy and carbon technical team.
Opened with a warm welcome from George Marston, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Northumbria University
“Northumbria University was delighted to host the 'Creating Low Carbon Campuses' meeting organized by Salix. Heat decarbonisation is a critical step in the road to Net Zero and the meeting helped all participants better understand the challenges and opportunities universities face as they decarbonise their campuses. Having worked with Salix on two Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme grants, Northumbria was pleased to deepen the relationship and meet the Salix team in person.”
Delegates also had the opportunity to learn from Dr Paul Steadman - Sustainability Manager, Northumbria University and Nazar Soofie, Head of Decarbonisation and Planned Maintenance Projects, Leeds City Council.
“Well done to the Salix team for organising an amazing public sector decarbonisation event. I was thrilled and honoured to be part of the guest keynote speaker lineup. Salix is a pivotal enabler for the UK’s drive to net zero. The PSDS scheme is a key driver for paving the way in adopting green technology and weaning the public sector from its carbon habit, which would otherwise be cost prohibitive.”
A workshop was also held that provided delegates to share ideas and work together to solve common problems within public sector decarbonisation scheme projects, throughout the day attendees were encouraged to submit questions electronically to prompt a productive and informative discussion.
We would like to send a sincere thank you to all attendees and panel members for making the event such a success.
The event concluded with a live Q&A discussion, thank you to our attendees and our panel members Hayley Bristow, Salix program manager, George Marston, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Northumbria University and Tom Bray, senior energy manager, Durham University for making the event such a success.
"I would like to say a huge thank you to Northumbria University for hosting our northern event for the higher and further education sector on Creating Low Carbon Campuses. It was great to meet so many from the sector, for what turned out to be a very engaging and thought-provoking day, discussing the challenges and opportunities when approaching Net Zero. I now very much look forward to the second event at the University of Greenwich.”
This event is the first of a two-part series with the second being held at Greenwich University.
